Why You Need Your Own Recovery Plan When You’re Married to an Alcoholic

Why You Need Your Own Recovery Plan When You're Married to an Alcoholic

As we navigate the challenges of living with an addicted spouse, it’s crucial to carve out space for ourselves and our own recovery. In this blog post we explore the importance of having a structured plan to help you do so.

Have you ever felt like you’re just ‘throwing spaghetti at the wall’, hoping something sticks in your journey as the wife of an alcoholic? When it comes to our own recovery and self-care this approach can leave us feeling frustrated and unfulfilled.

Without a clear plan, consistency and understanding fall by the wayside. Remember the saying ‘If you fail to plan, you plan to fail’? It rings true here. Whether it’s committing to regular exercise or working on your recovery, specificity and commitment are key.

If this is something you’re navigating right now, I want to give you something gentle to hold onto in the middle of it.

I created a short, faith-based guide called “When You Feel Like You’re Losing Yourself.” It’s for the wife of an alcoholic who has been so focused on him — on his drinking, his moods, his chaos — that she’s lost sight of herself somewhere along the way.

If that sounds familiar, this was written for you.

Think of preparing for your recovery like getting ready for a workout. You wouldn’t hit the gym without your gear, right? Similarly, gathering materials to help you with your recovery can make the process far more effective and even enjoyable.

Scheduling intentional time for your recovery, just as you would for any other important commitment, is very important. Even 15 minutes a day can make a world of difference.

As you begin to recognize the importance of working on your own recovery as the wife of an alcoholic I encourage you to commit to making it a priority in your life. The steps we take today can lead to lasting, positive changes in our lives. Remember, your recovery is just as important as your spouse’s, and by investing in yourself, you’re paving the way for a brighter future.

If this hit close to home, you’re not alone — and you don’t have to figure it out by yourself.

Before you go — I made something that might help you breathe a little easier today. It’s free, it’s short, and it was written for wives in exactly your situation. Get ‘When You Feel Like You’re Losing Yourself’ here.

Or if you’re ready for a little more you can choose your next small step right here, where you can find quick tools and focused resources built for your hardest moments.

When you’re ready for support that helps you actually move differently through this — not just to understand it better, but show up differently inside of it — the Secret Sisters Circle is where that happens. Private, faith-based, and built for women who are ready for something to finally change. You can even try it free for 7 days.
