CHAOS. That’s what my life was when my husband was deep in addiction.
Living with an addicted spouse can feel like a relentless storm. For Christian wives of alcoholics, the chaos often seeps into every aspect of life, from personal health to family dynamics. This post explores five transformative steps to help you rise above the turmoil, providing a roadmap to peace and resilience. These steps, rooted in detachment, learning, leaning on faith, decluttering, and seeking support, offer a beacon of hope and a path to reclaiming your life.
First, let’s talk about detachment. Detachment is not about abandoning your spouse; it’s about freeing yourself from the chains of addiction. By focusing on the addiction rather than the person, you can prevent it from consuming your life. Remember, detachment changes nothing but your perspective, allowing you to breathe amidst the chaos.
Secondly, it’s important to understand what your role in this journey. It’s crucial to differentiate between your responsibilities and God’s. Your part is not to fix your spouse’s addiction but to focus on your growth and healing. Stay in your lane and trust that God is working in ways you cannot see.
If this is something you’re navigating right now, I want to give you something gentle to hold onto in the middle of it.
I created a short, faith-based guide called “When You Feel Like You’re Losing Yourself.” It’s for the wife of an alcoholic who has been so focused on him — on his drinking, his moods, his chaos — that she’s lost sight of herself somewhere along the way.
If that sounds familiar, this was written for you.

Third, you need to lean into your faith. Faith can be a powerful anchor. Even when anger towards God surfaces, remember that you are not meant to shoulder this burden alone. Turning your struggles over to God can lighten your load and bring a sense of peace, even in the darkest times.
The fourth step is working to declutter your life. Eliminate any ‘noise’ that doesn’t serve you. Whether it’s unfollowing negative influences on social media or reducing unnecessary commitments, creating space for peace is vital. Simplifying your world helps protect your mental health and allows room for healing and growth.
And lastly, don’t underestimate the power of seeking out support and tools.
