3 Things to Focus on When You're Hanging by a Thread as the Wife of an Alcoholic

When life feels like a constant battle, especially when living with an addicted spouse, it’s easy to feel overwhelmed and drained.

This post explores three crucial areas to focus on when you feel like you’re hanging by a thread. These strategies aim to provide relief and guidance, helping you find a sense of peace amidst the chaos.

The first area to focus on is simplifying your life.

Simplifying your life might sound daunting, but small changes can make a significant difference. Start by evaluating your calendar. Are there activities that can be postponed or canceled? It’s okay to say no and prioritize your well-being over social obligations. Simplifying also involves reducing expectations – your house doesn’t have to be spotless, and meals don’t need to be gourmet. Focus on what truly matters and let go of the rest.

If this is something you’re navigating right now, I want to give you something gentle to hold onto in the middle of it.

I created a short, faith-based guide called “When You Feel Like You’re Losing Yourself.” It’s for the wife of an alcoholic who has been so focused on him — on his drinking, his moods, his chaos — that she’s lost sight of herself somewhere along the way.

If that sounds familiar, this was written for you.

The second area to focus on is by getting back to self-care basics.

Self-care is often misunderstood as luxury treatments, or shopping sprees, but for those in challenging situations it simply means addressing fundamental needs. Prioritize sleep, hydration, and nutrition. These basics provide the energy and clarity needed to navigate tough times.

The third area to focus on is seeking support.

Navigating life with an addicted spouse can be isolating, but you don’t have to go through it alone. Support networks, whether through counseling, Al-Anon meetings, or groups like the Secret Sisters Circle, can provide the understanding and encouragement you need.

In times of turmoil, focusing on simplifying your life, attending to basic needs, and seeking support can transform your experience from one of survival to one of resilience and hope. Remember, you’re not alone, and these steps can help create a more peaceful and manageable life.

If this hit close to home, you’re not alone — and you don’t have to figure it out by yourself.

Before you go — I made something that might help you breathe a little easier today. It’s free, it’s short, and it was written for wives in exactly your situation. Get ‘When You Feel Like You’re Losing Yourself’ here.

Or if you’re ready for a little more you can choose your next small step right here, where you can find quick tools and focused resources built for your hardest moments.

When you’re ready for support that helps you actually move differently through this — not just to understand it better, but show up differently inside of it — the Secret Sisters Circle is where that happens. Private, faith-based, and built for women who are ready for something to finally change. You can even try it free for 7 days.
