Are You Making Things Worse Without Realizing It? What Wives of Alcoholics Do Without Knowing

Are You Making Things Worse Without Realizing It

Living with a spouse struggling with addiction is a challenging journey that many of us never anticipated. As Christian wives, we often find ourselves caught in a whirlwind of emotions and uncertainties. In this post, we delve into some common traps we might fall into and explore ways to regain control and peace in our lives. Join us as we uncover practical insights and empowering strategies to help navigate these turbulent waters.

It’s easy to fall into patterns that unknowingly add to our stress. Asking questions we already know the answers to, such as ‘Have you been drinking?’ often leads to frustration and disappointment. Recognizing these patterns is the first step toward change. When we confront our husbands with these questions, we are often met with lies, as the addicted mind seeks self-preservation above all else.

Many of us have been there – searching for hidden bottles, hoping to confront our husbands and spark a change. Yet, this often leads to more conflict and less peace. Alcoholics tend to hide their stash, and finding it rarely results in the desired outcome. Instead, it brings about arguments and further division.

If this is something you’re navigating right now, I want to give you something gentle to hold onto in the middle of it.

I created a short, faith-based guide called “When You Feel Like You’re Losing Yourself.” It’s for the wife of an alcoholic who has been so focused on him — on his drinking, his moods, his chaos — that she’s lost sight of herself somewhere along the way.

If that sounds familiar, this was written for you.

We might try to control our husband’s drinking habits by buying less potent alcohol or making deals about when they can drink. These attempts often backfire, leaving us frustrated and resentful. Understanding that we cannot control their addiction is crucial. Accepting this can free us from unnecessary heartache and help us focus on fostering a more peaceful home environment.

Navigating life with an addicted spouse is undeniably difficult, but by recognizing and altering our own behaviors, we can create a more peaceful existence. By letting go of futile attempts to control and focusing on our well-being, we open the door to personal empowerment and renewed strength. Remember, you’re not alone on this journey, and positive change is within reach.

We invite you to reflect on these insights and consider how they might apply to your own life. Have you recognized any patterns in your actions that could be contributing to the chaos?
