5 Important Questions Every Wife of an Alcoholic Should Ask Herself

There comes a time in our journey as the wife of an alcoholic when we need to sit down with ourselves and ask some questions.

We get so caught up in the stress and chaos of everything that’s constantly coming at us that we stay in reactive mode, never taking the time to evaluate what is happening to US.

This post explores five crucial questions every wife of an alcoholic should ask herself to pave the way for clarity, healing, and peace. Through these reflections, you can begin to untangle the complexities and find a more stable ground for yourself and your family.

Question #1: Am I in Danger?

The first and most vital question is about safety. If you find yourself in a situation where your safety is compromised, seeking immediate help is paramount. Remember, no one should face violence or abuse, and your well-being is the top priority.

Question #2: Am I Taking Care of Myself?

It’s easy to neglect self-care when you’re consumed by your spouse’s addiction. Yet, nurturing your mental, physical, and spiritual health is critical. Reflect on your well-being: Are you getting enough rest? Eating nourishing foods? Taking time for mental peace? Prioritizing self-care ensures you can be there for your children and yourself.

If this is something you’re navigating right now, I want to give you something gentle to hold onto in the middle of it.

I created a short, faith-based guide called “When You Feel Like You’re Losing Yourself.” It’s for the wife of an alcoholic who has been so focused on him — on his drinking, his moods, his chaos — that she’s lost sight of herself somewhere along the way.

If that sounds familiar, this was written for you.

Question #3: Am I Untying from the Addiction?

Untying, or detaching, from your husband’s addiction is essential. This isn’t about abandoning him but about freeing yourself from the emotional bondage that his addiction creates. By doing so, you create space for personal growth and potentially encourage your husband to face his challenges.

Question #4: Do I Have Good Boundaries in Place?

Boundaries are not about controlling your spouse but about protecting yourself. They clarify what actions you will take if certain behaviors occur. Understanding and implementing boundaries can empower you and provide much-needed clarity in your relationship.

Question #5: Do I Have Support?

Navigating this journey alone can be isolating. Surround yourself with supportive communities, whether through church groups, Al-Anon, or programs like the Secret Sisters Circle. Getting specific, faith-based direction, and sharing experiences with those who understand can be incredibly healing.

Reflecting on these five questions can be a transformative step in your journey. They encourage you to prioritize safety, self-care, emotional independence, boundaries, and support. These elements are crucial in finding peace amidst the chaos of living with an addicted spouse.

If this hit close to home, you’re not alone — and you don’t have to figure it out by yourself.
